Overlapping circles on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A geometric tattoo of intersecting circles forms a rounded pattern on the forearm. Solid black lines alternate with fine dotted lines, creating a layered, delicate effect. The ink is entirely black and grey against pale skin, and the design is centred on the arm with a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had sealed the Tollgate Inn since Tuesday, and Mrs Ardagh gave me the room above the bread oven because I was the only guest who had brought a pair of compasses. I had been sent to fix the boundary of the Harrow estate before the thaw. Every morning I walked the lane with a brass drum compass and a ledger, and every morning the marks I found in the drifts were circles.

Not footprints exactly. Three hares, perhaps four, running the same loop around the stone trough, each track overlapping the last where it had cut back on itself. I drew them with a hard pencil, solid where the ground had been packed and dotted where the snow had softened and the edges had nearly closed. Mrs Ardagh's son watched from the byre door and said the hares did this every winter, that their mother had shown them the way, and that I should not stand in the middle of the ring or I would be asked to join it.

I laughed at that, and stopped laughing when I found my own boot prints had joined the pattern overnight, a neat arc that closed on itself at the gate. I measured the radius. It matched the trough, the well cover and the lamp bracket above the door, each one exactly eleven feet from the next.

On the last morning the thaw came in a single hiss off the roof. I went out with the ledger and found the lane wet and blank. The drawing lay open on my knee, clean as a plan, and I could not find a single mark on the ground that had not already been cut away by the water. I closed the book and did not open it again until the Harrow boundary was in the post.
