Overlapping crescent moons on the ribs
Dotwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of three overlapping crescent moons, built up from stippled dots that give each crescent a soft gradient from dark to pale grey. The moons are arranged in a diagonal cluster, with the darkest crescent at the top and the lightest at the bottom. The skin is pale and the photograph is taken close up on the side of the torso, with a blurred brick wall visible at the edge of the frame.

Mags had the lost property cupboard at Carlisle to herself after ten, when the last northbound had gone and the platform lamps buzzed like wasps. Nobody came asking for things at that hour, but she sorted them anyway: a single glove, a tin of travel sweets, a child's sandal with the strap snapped, a paperback with its cover torn off so that nobody would ever know what it had been.

On Thursdays the old signal box across the yard sat dark, and she took her tea out to the bench under the canopy to watch the sky clear. That was when she noticed the moons. Not a real sight, she knew that, just the same crescent repeated by the night shift's cheap lamps on the wet tarmac, pale at one edge and near black at the other, the way a thing looks when you have held it too long up to the light.
Her brother Tam had drawn them on the back of a timetable the summer before he went north to the rigs. Three crescents, each slid over the last, each a shade paler. He said they were the three of them, the moon going out, the moon going out and coming back. She laughed and told him to stop being soft. He never did come back, so she never asked him which one was which.
On the last Thursday of the month she put the timetable in the cupboard with the other unclaimed things, under the sandal, and left the door ajar so the platform light could fall across it. The first train came through at half past five. She did not look up to see whether anyone was on it.
