Small crescent moon on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon sits on the inner wrist, drawn as a single solid outline with a filled shape. The hand is raised in a loose fist against a plain pale wall, and the tattoo is the only mark on the skin. The ink is a single dark tone, and the simple composition keeps the small design clearly in focus.

Nobody on the Fenwick estate could say when the moon had stopped coming up over the car park, only that the children noticed first. Ada Penrose, who lived on the ninth floor of Corvin House, said it had slipped into her kitchen drawer with the takeaway menus and the spare keys, and she was not going to be argued with about it.

The council sent a man with a clipboard. He stood on the balcony, looked up at a sky that was only grey, and wrote something down. "It's not ours to fix," he said, and went back down in the lift, which was the only thing on the estate that still worked. So Ada took the stairs, all eleven flights, with a tin of ground coffee under one arm and her mother's kitchen scissors in her coat pocket.

On the roof the wind smelled of diesel and wet concrete. She reached up into the low cloud above the aerial, cut a thin curve from it the way you'd trim fat from a chop, and folded it once. She laid the sliver on the parapet, where it glowed like a fingernail paring. Below, the estate lights came on one by one, and a boy on the fourth floor stopped kicking his ball to wave.

By morning the sliver had grown to a proper crescent, pale at the edges, and it hung over the car park as if it had never been away. Ada never told anyone which drawer it had come from. Each night after that she set the tin on the parapet with its lid off, in case it wanted to come home.
