Her husband planted it the spring before the storm took him off the rocks, a whip of a thing bought from a barrow in Penzance, and it had stood there sulking in the wind ever since.

The owl arrived in February, a tawny with a face like a dinner plate, and it took up residence in the fork of the trunk as though it had paid for the spot. Agnes told the relief keeper it was a bad omen. He told her owls ate mice, and the mice had been eating her flour.

By April the branches had put out blossom, pink as the inside of a shell, and the owl sat among it at dusk, turning its head to follow the sweep of the lamp across the water. Agnes began leaving the shutters open an hour longer than she needed to, so she could watch it blink.

On the last evening of the month the mist came in thick off the Atlantic and the fog horn wailed for six hours without stopping. When she climbed the stairs at midnight with her cup of tea, the fork of the cherry tree was empty, and a single pink petal was stuck to the glass where something had flown against the lantern. She stood there a long while, cradling the cup, then wiped the pane clean with her sleeve and went back down to the kitchen to wait for dawn.
