Owl and key on the inner forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large owl sits on the inner forearm, with teal-coloured eyes, a teal patterned chest and wing detail, and a mandala-like ornament behind its head. Its feathers are rendered in grey shading and the outline is bold, with a grey key hanging beneath the owl. A small piece of script sits near the wrist, and the photograph is taken against a dark background with the lower body cropped out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keeper of the south archive had hung a brass key on a nail by the door for forty years, and the nail was the only thing in the room that never gave way. Brother Anselm told the novices this on the first night of the winter vigil, when the wind came off the moor and rattled the shutters like a bird wanting in. He said the key opened nothing anymore. The lock it fitted had been melted down for shot during a siege that nobody alive remembered, and the door it once guarded had been bricked over by a prior who believed in drafts more than in books.

Still, the owl came every year to sit on the gutter above the refectory. Grey as ash, with eyes the colour of the lagoon at Tintagel in summer, and a mantle of painted feathers that the old brothers said had been a gift from a woman who sold ink to the printers in town. She had walked up the hill one autumn with a satchel of blue pigment and a question nobody wrote down. What did a house of silence keep that it could not name? The brothers had shown her the empty lock. She had laughed and drawn the owl on the wall of the infirmary in charcoal, then gone home.

On the last night of the vigil a boy named Tobias crept up the ladder to the gutter, meaning to prove the owl was only a story. He found a second key tucked in the leaf-mould beside its claw, cold and green with age. He carried it down to Anselm, who turned it over twice and then began, very slowly, to laugh. It fitted the bricked-up door, and behind the door lay the scriptorium's forgotten index, every book the monks had ever been too ashamed to catalogue, waiting in the dark for someone patient enough to ask.
