Swallow, globe and roses design sketch
Botanical · Colour · Flash
The drawing shows a swallow perched above a globe on a stand, with a compass or clock face beneath it and three roses at the centre. Chains hang from the roses and carry an anchor, a tag with handwritten lettering, a paw print locket, a heart locket and small droplet charms. The fine hatched linework is in blue ink on cream paper, with shading on the globe, roses and bird, and the composition is a vertical arrangement on a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ana Ferrer counted the mules twice at dusk on the Col de Varo because the second count never matched the first. The last snow had gone grey along the track, and the refuge roof ticked as it cooled. Her grandfather's brass compass hung from her belt on a fine chain, its lid dented where he had dropped it on the scree forty years before.

The swallow had come over the pass three days early, thin and furious, and taken the rafters above the stove as its own. Ana soaked bread in warm milk and dripped it from her fingers. Paco, who ran the refuge and talked mostly to the weather, shook his head. "Swallows don't cross before the thaw. Something has gone wrong in its clock."
On the third night the post mule brought a parcel from Valencia, her aunt's looping hand across the front, and a luggage tag tied to the string. Bon voyage, it said, though nobody had gone anywhere. Inside was a letter about the house being sold, the brass globe going to a cousin, and a question: was the locket with the paw print still in the bottom drawer? Ana had forgotten the locket existed.
At first light she threw open the shutter. The swallow shot out over the valley, low and certain, and turned south where the land fell away towards the coast. Ana watched until it was a speck against the rock. Then she pocketed the compass, tucked the tag into her coat, and started down the far side of the pass after it.
