Lace heart with crown and dagger design

Mixed · Flash

Two hand-drawn sheets show an ornate heart filled with filigree and lace-like scrollwork, held by two hands, with a crown at the top and a dagger piercing the design. The upper sketch uses fine grey pencil shading, while the lower sketch is outlined in dark ink with a soft pink wash inside the heart. The composition is centred on the heart, with the hands and crown framing it on a light paper background.

The lace had to be off the pillow before the bell for evening service, and Ada Pyne still had nine pins to set. Mr Hallam wanted the heart finished by Thursday, the crown picked out in silver thread, the whole piece stitched to a dagger brooch so the Ferrier girl could wear it to the wedding without having to look at the groom's face.

She had drawn the pattern herself three weeks earlier, on cartridge paper that smelled of lamp oil. The heart began as a plain cupped shape, with scrollwork climbing its sides like ivy up a churchyard wall. The hands were Hallam's idea, holding the heart up as though it were something to be offered. Ada had wanted those hands to belong to nobody, so she drew them thin and careful, and late one night she went over the lower edge with a brush dipped in rose wash, because the paper looked too grey to hold anything warm.

Hallam came for the piece at dusk and turned it over on his palm. He found the pinholes where she had marked the crown, and he found, tucked into the ground where no one would look unless they were looking for it, a second heart: smaller, unpierced, with the dagger drawn through it in red thread. He held it to the window for a long time. 'The girl will not wear this,' he said at last. 'No,' Ada said. 'She will wear the other one.'

He folded the lace along its pins and laid it in the box, face down, like a letter nobody would read until they were old.
