Owl in a dreamcatcher design

Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a large owl with detailed round eyes and feathered shading, perched on a thin branch at the lower edge of a circle. Inside the circle, a dreamcatcher web of straight lines and small dots fills the upper space behind the owl. The artwork is rendered in graphite pencil with soft shading and sharp highlights on white paper.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The owl came in through the fire door on the third Saturday of the winter season, and I let it stay because the band was loud and nobody else noticed. It perched on the rim of my grandmother's dreamcatcher, the willow hoop I'd nailed above the cloakroom hatch to keep the draught off the coats, and it watched the dancers the way Mr Okafor watched the till.

Every night the Gilt Rooms filled with people shedding things. Gloves, a silver cigarette case, a wedding band tied up in a sugar bag. I logged each one on a card and looped it onto string. The web over the hatch grew heavy with tickets and ribbons, and the owl ruffled its feathers at every brass crescendo as though it were counting the beats. Nobody claimed the blue shoe. Nobody claimed a lot of things.

On the last night before the hall shut for its refit, a man in a grey overcoat asked me for his hat, and I could not find it. I went through every hook twice. When I looked up, the owl had dropped something into the web, and the hat sat there folded in the cotton threads like a moth. I unhooked it and handed it across the counter without a word, and he didn't ask how it got there.

At dawn I climbed the ladder to take the hoop down for the builders. The owl had gone. Only one grey feather remained, caught in the lowest knot, turning slowly in the draught from the fire door.
