The ushers had been told the pages were for the seating plan, so nobody asked why I was carrying the parish registers across the churchyard in a carrier bag. Tom's grandmother had left them to the library in 1971 and nobody had opened the crate since. I opened it at a quarter past ten, sitting on the vestry step, with the bride's father pacing behind me and a bottle of cava going warm in the sun.

Inside, between the baptisms and the burials, I found a pencil sketch in the margin of a 1958 page: an owl with eyes drawn far too large, perched on a stack of books, its talons gripping the cover of the topmost one. Underneath, in careful capitals, she had written WAIT FOR ME. Tom had never mentioned an owl. He had only told me she sat up nights reading by the fire and never once wanted a fuss.

I took the page to the reception and propped it against the cake. Tom read the line twice, then laughed the way he does when he is about to cry, and went to find his father. The sketch sat under the fairy lights all afternoon, and people leaned over it to say how like her it was.

When the speeches were done I slipped the page back between the registers and carried the crate to the cloakroom, where it would stay until someone else thought to look.
