Black mandala tattoo on a wrist
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical black mandala sits across the inner wrist, built from radiating petals, fine lines and clusters of dots. The shading is mostly solid black with soft grey gradients that give the centre depth, and the dotted outer ring frames the design. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against a grey pavement and dark surface.

You are on your knees in the cool of the new hall at Antioch, and the master has given you the centre of the floor, the part everyone will stand over and nobody will look down at. He lays a knotted cord across the wet lime and snaps it, and the line marks eight petals radiating from a single point. "Count them twice," he says. "Then count them with your thumb."

You work through the morning with a bronze pick and pots of tesserae sorted by shade: black from the kilns across the river, grey from the riverstone, white from the quarry on the coast. Every petal wants the same number of pieces. Every dot is a single tessera set a finger's width from its neighbour. Your first ring drifts, so you lift it and lay it again while the master watches without speaking, the way he watches the sea for weather.
By the third day the centre is done and the petals have begun to fill, the grey stones darkening toward the heart so the eye sinks inward. The boy who carries lime asks why the dots run round the outside and not through the petals. You tell him the outer ring is where the floor stops being yours and becomes the room's. He does not understand, and you are not certain you do either.
When the lime sets, you walk out onto the finished floor in bare feet and find the rosette has no beginning and no end, only a turning. Under the eighth petal, where no one will ever kneel, you have pressed one black stone that is yours alone, and the lamp smoke drifts over it as if it had always been there.
