Small elephant head on a finger

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of an elephant head faces forward on the side of a finger, with the ears, trunk and tusks drawn in outline and shaded in black and grey. The shading gives the head soft volume and the eye is detailed enough to read clearly. The hand is held up against a grey, out of focus background, with red painted nails framing the tattoo.

The crate has been knocking against the bulkhead since Aden, and by the third morning out the boatswain has stopped pretending he cannot hear it. You are the only one aboard who ever tended animals, which is how you come to be carrying a bucket of warm mash down the forward ladder with a lamp swinging from your wrist. The calf inside was left behind by a travelling menagerie that folded in Port Said, and its owner settled the debt by signing her over to the captain's ledger. The crew have named her Admiral's Debt.

She will not eat unless you hum. You discover this on the first night, when she stands rigid in the dark with her ears pressed flat, and the sailors start muttering about bad luck. You sit on an upturned cask and sing the one song your grandmother used for hauling nets, something about a widow and a wet spring, and slowly the grey trunk unfurls through the slats and finds the bucket. Her ears lift, wrinkled and wide as sails, and you realise she has been listening the whole time.

Off Finisterre the weather turns. Water sluices across the deck, the crate splinters, and by the time you reach her she has braced her legs against the lurch as though she has done this a hundred times. She wraps her trunk around your wrist and holds on. You raise the lamp to a gap in the planking so she can see the swell heaving under the moon, and for an hour neither of you says anything that needs saying.

At Liverpool the dockers want a sling and a winch. You tell them she will walk down the gangway if somebody goes in front, so you go, backing down the planks with your palm open, and she follows, placing each foot as if the wood might give. At the bottom she stops, lifts her trunk and breathes warm across your knuckles, and the first rain of the English spring starts falling on both of you.
