Mandala owl on the ribs

Dotwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A large owl faces forward with detailed eyes, a ceremonial mandala-style chest and layered ornamental wings. The design is built from fine linework and stippled dots, with shading that adds depth to the feathers and eyes. The image is black and grey on warm skin, with a red waistband and dark clothing at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The night the harbour lamps failed, Mirela Dunmore climbed the lighthouse stair with a torch in her teeth and a jar of lamp oil clinking against her hip. Below her the Ardmore fleet was coming home blind, nine boats strung out across the grey water, and the old keeper's owl had already gone quiet in the rafters, the way it did before a storm. She had been told as a child that the owl kept the lamp's count, that it knew how many wicks there were and would not let one go out unnoticed.

At the top, the lantern room was cold and smelled of rust. The brass mechanism had seized and the glass was smeared with salt. She knelt beside the pedestal and began to work the spindle loose with her fingers, counting turns the way her grandfather had taught her, one for each spoke of the wheel painted on the iron door. Halfway through the ninth turn, something soft landed on her shoulder. She did not look round. She knew the weight of those talons from every winter of her life.

When the light finally caught, it threw a wide, trembling fan across the water, and every boat turned toward it like a spoke toward a hub. Mirela sat back on her heels and watched the first hull slide between the breakwaters. The owl shifted, settled its feathers into their stiff ceremonial rings, and fixed its gaze on the sea as if it had never once doubted the lamp would burn. In the morning she would find a single grey feather on the stair, perfectly round at the tip, and she would keep it in her coat pocket for the rest of her working life.
