Ornamental owl on a thigh
Blackwork · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A large owl perches on a bare branch, with its wings and chest filled with black ink and fine white filigree, scrollwork and knotwork patterns. The eyes are the only colour, a bright blue, set against the dark head and framed by ornate white detailing. The design is centred on the outer thigh and fills most of the frame against a blue and black background.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the lamp, because the old ones say the owl never likes a dark room with no fire in it. Now, when the Sable Reach was still a ship and not a city bolted to the back of a comet, there was a keeper named Oriel Vance who tended the seed vaults in the lowest ring. She counted her hours by the blinking of a grey owl that roosted on the cold pipe above her bench. Nobody had brought that owl aboard. It arrived one winter, the way frost does, and it stayed.

Its feathers were stamped with patterns the engineers swore were printed by the ship's loom, scrolls and knots of white light running up its breast like frost on glass. Its eyes were the only warm thing in the ring, two blue lamps that never dimmed. When the hull began to groan in the eleventh year of the long drift, Oriel climbed up and asked it what the groaning meant. The owl turned its head all the way round, the way owls do, and looked down the corridor toward the failing coolant spine.
She followed its gaze. Three hundred metres of pipe, and a crack no wider than a thread. She patched it with the last of the silver solder while the owl watched without blinking. When she finished, it lifted from the pipe and settled on her shoulder, its claws pricking through her coat, and she took that weight to mean the job was done properly.
The ring stayed cold for another forty years, and the seeds kept their sleep. Nobody ever saw the owl leave, but every keeper after Oriel swore that on the night a hull crack first warmed to the touch, two blue lights would be waiting at the end of the corridor, steady as a promise.
