Owl with spread wings across upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large owl with outstretched wings covers the upper back, facing forward with wide, detailed eyes. The feathers are built from fine hatching, stippling and layered shading, with ornamental patterns across the wings and a round medallion at the centre of the body. The image is in black and grey only, photographed from behind with the person's head turned away from the camera.

Tuesday, 2 a.m. The lamp in the customs hut at Gretna Ferry has a moth that will not leave it alone, and I have been watching it for three hours because the lorries stopped coming after midnight. My brother Alwyn says a watchman who doesn't sleep starts seeing things. He is probably right. Tonight I saw the owl on the fence post again, the one with the round brass button stuck to its chest where some lad lost a coin pushing it through the wire. It sits with its wings held out as if it is drying them, and it looks at me the way the sergeant looks at a form with a missing signature.

Wednesday. Rain all day. The owl was gone at dusk and back at ten, and this time it had something in its beak, a folded paper scrap no bigger than a ticket stub. I went out in my oilskin and it lifted without a sound, which owls are supposed to do, but the wind off the Solway was loud enough that I should have heard it. The paper said only KEEP THE LAMP LIT in pencil, the capitals pressed so hard they cut the grain. I have no idea who writes like that.
Thursday. Alwyn found the paper in my coat and laughed until he coughed. He says I have been drinking the tea from the bottom of the pot again. I did not tell him that the medallion on the bird's breast has a pattern exactly like the old ferry tokens, the ones they stopped minting the year our father drowned, and that the owl's feathers look like they have been counted one by one by someone with time to spare. Tonight I am leaving the lamp on and the door open a crack.
