Owl with spread wings on chest
Traditional · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A large owl with outstretched wings fills the centre of the chest, with a black triangle above its head and an ornate object beneath its talons. The owl has bold black outlines and solid colour in red, green, blue and orange, while the surrounding black swirls and cloud shapes are shaded in black and grey. On the left, a sleeve of blue and grey waves and clouds runs down the upper arm.

Sit closer, the lamp is nearly out and the rain has got into my knees. You want to know why the owl of Saltgate carries a lamp and not a mouse? Because the fog came up off the river the winter the bells were melted down, and nobody could tell the quay from the sky. The lamplighter, Tobias Vane, climbed the old tower of St Brannoc's with a brass lantern and nothing else, and he was never a man who hurried.

Up in the belfry sat an owl that no one had ever seen fly in daylight. It had eyes the colour of marmalade and feathers like a rainbow spilled across a fishmonger's slab. When the wick guttered, Tobias did not weep. He unhooked the lantern from his belt, set it in the owl's talons, and said, "Keep it burning until someone finds the way."
For three nights the owl stood on the ridge with its wings flung wide, the grey smoke of the fog curling round its feathers the way foam curls round a rudder. Boats came in by the sound of its wings. The captains swore the light hung above the harbour mouth, a little gold triangle under a dark gable, and they steered toward it like men steering toward their own mothers' kitchen windows.
On the fourth morning the fog lifted and the owl was gone, but the lantern lay on the stones at the foot of the tower, cold, its glass unbroken. Tobias picked it up and found a single brass feather tucked under the handle. That is how you know a lamp has been kept lit, my friend. Somebody always leaves a feather for the next one to find.
