Skull, roses and owl across a full torso
Traditional · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A large skull with roses and swirling ornament sits across the upper torso, with a small red hammer and sickle beneath it. Below, a black and grey owl with spread wings is shaded with fine stippling and scale-like feathers. The skull and roses are in bold colour while the owl is in greyscale, and the sleeves on both arms are also tattooed.

The owl came aboard at Murmansk with the coal, and nobody admitted letting it in. Ilya Varga found it on the lamp housing of the wheelhouse on the third night out, grey-white and sodden, its eyes shut against the spray. He did not touch it. His grandmother had told him that a bird taken aboard a ship was a debt, and debts at sea were paid in whatever currency the sea preferred.

The bosun, Gerasim, said it was nothing but a hungry bird. He had painted a grinning skull on the mess bulkhead years ago, ringed with red-tipped roses and curling ornament, because the men wanted a saint and Gerasim had no patience for saints. Ilya fed the owl dried herring from his own ration tin. In the mornings it turned its head with the stiff slowness of a clock and watched the radio room, where Morse came in from the ice like a pulse nobody was supposed to hear.
On the fifth night the message arrived. Ilya copied it onto the pad, then sat with his pencil above the last group for a long time. The captain's stamp, a small red hammer and sickle, was already printed at the foot of the form, waiting for a signature. He tore the sheet in half, then in quarters, and fed the pieces to the stove one at a time.
At first light the owl was gone from the lamp housing. Ilya went out onto the wet deck and found a single grey feather lying by the hatch. Above the ice a dark shape was turning west, back towards the coast it had come from, its wings spread wide enough to hold the whole grey morning.
