Black phoenix with spread wings
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette of a phoenix with its wings spread wide and its head raised, set against a plain white background. The wings and tail are built from sweeping, tapered feather shapes with fine trailing lines at the tips, and the bird's body is filled in with no internal shading. The image is a single-colour design with no skin or background detail.

The snow had buried the lane to the gatepost by the time the stranger knocked, and I remember thinking nobody sensible walks the moor road in January. He stamped his boots on the mat, shook white off his shoulders, and asked for a room with a view of the ridge. Night came down hard. I banked the fire in the snug and went round the tables with a rag, and every time I looked up, the board above the hearth caught my eye: the black bird my father painted the year we took the inn, wings thrown wide as if it meant to lift the roof off. Dad always said a phoenix was only a fire that had learned patience. I never believed him, but I left the board where it was.
Around two the chimney started roaring like a bellows. The stranger came down the stairs with his coat over his arm and stood watching the flue. "It's not smoke you should worry about," he said. "It's the draught. It pulls the ash up and hands it back to the rafters." He nodded at the beams, where a fine grey dust had settled like feathers.
Come morning the snow had stopped and the road was clear. He left two coins on the bar and a single black feather laid flat beside them, long and tapered, with a hair-fine line trailing from its tip. I never saw him on the road again. I still sweep the hearth every night, and I still leave the shutter open a crack for whatever might come back down the ridge.
