A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The steward of Caldmere had counted the grain three times, and three times the sums came out short by exactly the same measure, so Ysolde Marrow climbed the east wall with a lantern in her teeth and a ledger under her arm. The owl was already waiting on the bare branch above the granary gate, as it had every night since the old queen died. Its eyes were the colour of wet pewter and wider than any sensible bird's, and it watched her come up the ivy without blinking once.

'You're late,' she told it. It swivelled its head halfway round, which was its answer to most things. The swirls on its breast were not feathers at all but the ink-marks of the royal scribes, a hundred years of tallies pressed into its shape by a previous keeper who thought it would make a handsome seal. Ysolde ran her thumb over them and found the one that didn't match, a loop turned backwards like a question mark.

The owl dropped from the branch, caught a field mouse in the wet grass below, and returned to the same twig, where it ate with great dignity while the lantern guttered. By the time the bell rang for matins, Ysolde had the names: three carters, one clerk, and a steward who kept the ledger's back pages in his own hand. The owl had never once told her anything. It had only sat where she could see the wall from it.

At dawn the steward found the granary doors open and his own seal lying on the cobbles, face down in the dew. Nobody in Caldmere ever learned who had lifted it. The owl was seen that morning on the gate branch, regarding the town with the mild, enormous attention of a bird that had already decided what it would do next.
