Sunflowers and butterfly on a foot
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
Two yellow sunflowers with black outlines sit on the top of a foot, joined by a orange and yellow butterfly and thin black swirling vines. The linework is bold and smooth, with flat yellow and orange fills and little shading. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a white background, with toes and red nail polish visible at the bottom.

Cook says I am wasting good soil on weeds, but the first shoots came up green and stubborn the day after we cleared the Bay, and now the men stop by on their way to the watch to check on them as if they were passengers.

The butterfly arrived off the Canaries, a yellow and orange thing no bigger than a biscuit crumb, clinging to the mainsail as though it had signed on. It would not leave. It rode the bowsprit through three days of calm, then lifted with every gust and came back, and Tom Pelling swore it was steering us, though he swears most things after rum. When the squall hit off Madeira, the sunflower box went over the side of the deck and I thought it lost, but the butterfly stayed low over the wreck of the stems until I got my hands on the box again.
One head survived, bent but whole, and it has turned every morning since to follow the sun across the water, the way the binnacle needle follows north. I have not told the captain. He would only ask what good a flower is at sea.
Keep the next tin for yourself, and tell Mam the flowers face the way we are going, even on the days we cannot see land. I will write again from Lisbon if the post goes out before the ship does. Your brother, Will.
