Pair of angel wings line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a symmetrical pair of angel wings drawn in black linework on a plain white background. Each wing is built from layered feather shapes, with fine hatched lines and strokes that suggest the texture and shadow of the feathers. The design is black and grey, and the composition is centred with both wings spread upwards and tapering downwards.

Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Harrow Point could say when the wings first appeared on the bin store roof, only that Mrs Okafor's son went up for a football and came down white-faced, carrying two feathers as long as his arm. The council man came, looked, and wrote something down. The wings stayed.

They were not a bird's wings. Everyone agreed on that. They were folded the way a tall man folds his coat over a chair, the feathers lying in layers with grey lines running down them like rain on glass. By the second week the children had stopped climbing up to touch them. The old men said a thing that large needed feeding, so they left bread crusts and a saucer of milk on the roof, and the saucer was always empty by morning.
Later, in the winter of the power cuts, when the lifts stopped and the stairwell lights died, a girl called Precious Dunn climbed fourteen floors with a torch in her teeth to fetch her gran's insulin. She lost her way between the seventh and eighth landings, where every door looked the same, and sat on the concrete until the wings came down the stairwell, rustling like carrier bags. They stood over her without touching. She put her hand up, felt the air move, and found she could see the way down.
When the lights came back in spring, the saucer was full and nobody had filled it. The wings were gone from the roof. Precious still says she only followed the draught, and her gran still says a draught never once in its life smelled of bread.
