Pair of fairy wings line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a symmetrical pair of fairy wings drawn as thin black lines on a white background. Each wing has long, curving veins that branch and taper towards the tips, with the two wings meeting at a central point. The drawing uses only single outlines with no shading or fill, so the composition is open and evenly balanced.

Dear Nell,

The ovens were lit at half three, so you can stop worrying that I am sleeping in. I have flour in my eyebrows and a burn on the heel of my hand shaped like a comma, and Mr Adeyemi says that means I am finally a baker. The shop smells of scorched sugar and yeast, and the only light before six is the orange glow through the oven door and the lamp over the bench.

The windowpane test is the part I love most. You pull a little dough between your fingers until it goes thin enough to see through, and if it holds, the gluten has built its web properly. Mr Adeyemi holds his up to the lamp and says it looks like the veins of a leaf, or a pair of wings somebody has stretched out to dry. I thought he was being soft. Then he let me try, and the lines of light branched and tapered exactly as he said, and I stopped being sure which of us had made it.

Last night a moth got into the shop through the back door and lay on the cooling rack, its wings dusted white. I thought it was dead until it lifted one and the lamplight came through the lines. I carried it out to the yard on a spoon, and it sat there a long while before it went up over the bins and the wall, grey against a sky only just beginning to pale.

By the time I came back in, the first tray was out and the crusts were cracking as they cooled, ticking like a little clock. I'll bring you a loaf on Sunday. Keep the kettle on.

Love, Jo
