Pair of small birds on clasped forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands and forearms are clasped together, each marked with a pair of small black bird silhouettes in flight. The linework is fine and simple, with solid black ink and no shading. The tattoos are small and set against skin, with a red nail visible on one hand and a dark, out-of-focus background.

Dear Tom,

The swifts came back to the chapel eaves on Tuesday, the same two that nest under the lead flashing, and I stood in the yard with the washing and counted them screaming over the harbour as though they'd been sent for. Mum says it's the same pair every year, though nobody can prove it. She says it the way she says the tide is turning, as if faith were a kind of weather.
Mr Pascoe has finally sold the dance hall to the council man from Penzance, so the Saturday band has nowhere to play. You'd have laughed. Last night we danced on the boards anyway, the four of us in our good shoes, and Ruth stopped halfway through the quickstep to cry because she said the floor still smelt of your pipe tobacco. I told her it was only varnish, and she told me to hush, that I never knew anything that mattered.
I walked out to the end of the breakwater this morning and waited for the Morwenna to come round the point. Her hull was rusted red where the paint had bleached, and I could have sworn I saw Dad's cap on the wheelhouse rail, though it can't have been. When she turned into the bay two birds came low over the water, one behind the other, wings set as if they were pulling a thread taut between them. I don't know which of you they were. I don't think it matters. Come home before the swifts leave.
Love, Jenny
