Matching small anchor tattoos on foot and wrist
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two small anchor tattoos in black ink sit on separate parts of the body, one on the top of a bare foot near the ankle and one on the inner wrist of a hand holding the wrist. The anchors have thin, single-weight outlines with minimal shading and a simple rope-free shank. The skin tones are natural and the background is a dark, out-of-focus green surface, which keeps attention on the two small designs.

The Mary Ellen had sat on the slipway at Whitby for three days before Dad admitted the gearbox was finished, and by then the whole fleet was talking about the weather building out past the Dogger Bank. I was fifteen and hopeless at knots. Gran kept a tin of Indian ink in the dresser drawer, the kind she used for marking creels, and she set it on the kitchen table beside a sewing needle and said if we were going to be daft about it, we might as well be neat.

So Kit and I sat on the back step with the door open, and I pricked two small anchors, one for her ankle and one for the inside of my wrist, because she said a sailor's girl ought to have something that stayed put when everything else was moving. The ink stung like nettles. She didn't flinch. She just counted the gulls on the harbour wall until I finished, and then she made me promise we would both be back on the quay before the first tide turned.
The Ellen Rose went out at four the next morning with Dad at the wheel and Kit on the net. I stood on the wall in Gran's wellies until the lights were gone past the pier head, and I kept my wrist turned under my sleeve the whole time, as if the anchor could feel the swell.
The fleet came home two days later, four boats instead of five, and the Ellen Rose was the last through the piers with her hull scraped white along one side. Kit jumped the gap before the rope was even fast. She held out her foot to show me the little anchor was still there, grey now and blurred at the edges, and then she laughed and pulled my sleeve up to check mine. We had both kept our promise. The sea had kept its share, but the ink had held.
