A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The show had sold its elephant in March and its lion in April, and by the time the rain came to Selby there was only Nell left to shoot apples off the heads of volunteers. She wore the same green coat every night, and the lining held two arrows, one pointing left and one pointing right, because her grandmother had told her a bow was only honest if it knew where both ends of the road lay.

A farm boy called Tom Ashby stood at the edge of the ring each evening with a bag of windfalls and a question he never asked. On the seventh night Nell asked it for him. 'Can you hold a line?' He said he could. She taught him in the wet grass behind the wagons: nock, draw, breathe out before the release, and never look at the apple. He missed for three nights and hit on the fourth, and the ringmaster, Mr Pell, wept into his hat and paid him a shilling.

On the last night the tent flap blew open and the crowd drifted off towards the lane. Tom's arrow went wide into the canvas and stuck there, quivering. Nell pulled it out and said nothing for a long while. Then she handed him the arrow with the left-pointing head and kept the other. 'Go that way when the show packs,' she said. 'I'll go this way. Between us we'll cover the county.'

By morning the wagons had gone from Selby and the field was only ruts and a scatter of bruised windfalls. Tom walked north with his arrow on his shoulder, and somewhere behind him Nell walked south with hers. Neither of them looked back, because the arrows had already shown them the way.
