Mandala Minnie Mouse silhouette on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A mandala-filled silhouette in the shape of Minnie Mouse's head and bow sits on the outer thigh. The design uses fine outlines with dense stippled dots shading the petals, scalloped borders and bow. The tattoo is rendered only in black and grey on pale skin, with a dark garment at the top of the frame.

The stipple took Edie three weeks of evenings, one dot at a time, the nib dipped so often her wrist ached like a bad tooth. Mr Haskell had ordered a lace mat the size of a tea tray for the Co-operative's jubilee window, a mandala with a scalloped edge, and he had not asked for mice. She had drawn the ears in pencil anyway, two round lobes sitting on the rim, and a bow where the middle should have been. He would have to take it or leave it on the cutting table.

He came in on the Thursday with his hat already in his hand and stood over the board a long time. 'Pemberton from the pier saw the drawing,' he said at last. 'He'll give four pounds for the original, framed, to hang over the cake stall at the fair.' Edie kept her eyes on the bobbins. 'It isn't for sale,' she said. 'It's for the window, like you asked.' 'It's a mouse, Edie.' 'It's a mandala,' she said, 'with a bow on it. Ask any girl who ever won a ribbon at the fair.'

He left without the drawing. That night she pinned it above the sink and carried on pricking the pattern through, row after row, until the lace was finished in the grey hour before the milk cart. The scallops went on last. She counted them under her breath as she worked, forty-eight in all, one for every dot she had sworn at, and when she cut the final thread the bow sat square in the middle of the morning light, as if it had always been meant to be there.
