Fine line wrist tattoo of a paint palette, ink pot, quill and camera above the Italian phrase L'arte è la soluzione al caos.

Palette, ink, quill and camera with Italian script

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A row of four small icons sits above a line of script lettering on the inner wrist: a paint palette with red, blue and green dots, a black ink pot, a quill feather and a grey outlined camera. The icons use thin, even black linework, and the palette is the only element with colour, while the lettering is in black ink. The image is a close, straight-on phone photo with the tattoo centred on a pale forearm against a blue fabric background.

The bilge pump has been coughing since Braunston, and you are kneeling on the galley floor with a torch in your teeth, hauling out the last of the crates your aunt Ottilie refused to unpack for nineteen years. Damp has got into the cardboard. Under a sodden tea towel you find a paint palette, its wells crusted to the colour of old brick, and beside it an ink pot whose glass stopper has fused shut.

Ottilie painted roses on every narrowboat between here and Cambridge, and she never once finished a letter without crossing something out. Her quill is stuck to an envelope postmarked 1983, addressed to a man in Verona whose name has run to blue smudge. Beneath it lies a grey camera with the film still inside, its counter stopped at twenty-two. Someone has written on the lid in pencil: l'arte e la soluzione al caos. You laugh out loud, alone in the cabin, because it sounds exactly like her.

You spend the afternoon prising the palette open with a butter knife, soaking the ink in hot water, and shaking the camera until a tin of matches rattles somewhere inside it. The lock keeper walks past with his dog and lifts a hand. Outside the window the cut is a mess of duckweed and crisp packets, and nothing about the day makes sense.

By dusk the palette has come clean enough to show a single thumbprint of ultramarine. You set the four things in a row on the table where the lamp can reach them, then take out a pencil and write the date beneath them. You hang the palette on the hook above the stove, where it has always belonged, and go looking for a stamp.
