Palm tree and fine line forearm tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms are shown side by side, each with several small fine line tattoos. The left arm has a shaded palm tree with a long trunk, a small bird in flight, a shell like outline, and the word island in script near the wrist. The right arm has the word WILDERNESS in a serif typeface, a small circle on a vertical line, and vertical script running along the forearm that is not fully legible.

Dom had sworn in the car that he would not lose them, and again at the register office, and again on the church steps where he had turned out every pocket in front of the vicar's wife.

Their grandfather had left them a cardboard box of things to be opened on the day: a brass compass with a cracked glass, a cowrie shell, and a postcard of a palm-fringed island with nothing written on the back. He had surveyed the sounds for the Admiralty before he sold insurance, and he liked people to know where they stood relative to the things that mattered. Nell had found a pencilled note in the lid, which said only: take the bearing from the headland, then stop looking at it.
At half past two the ferry rounded the breakwater with its horn going. Dom found the rings first, tucked inside the shell-shaped dish where the caterers had been keeping the sugared almonds. He had put them there himself at seven and forgotten, he said, which Nell decided to believe. She laughed until she had to sit on the wall. Then she lined the compass needle up with the far headland and let the island slide out of her head, and when the bride came down the slipway with the wind in her veil, Nell did not look at the water once.
