Palm tree on a forearm with shell bracelets

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of a palm tree, with a tall curved trunk and a crown of drooping fronds, sits on the inner forearm. The palm is drawn with solid, dark ink and fine, detailed frond edges, with some soft shading on the trunk. A braided cord bracelet and a strand of cowrie shells sit above it, and the photo is shot in monochrome against a dark fabric background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The palm had been planted the morning the tide-clerk of Ysmar counted out the last cowrie, and by the time you reached the harbour gate it stood taller than the customs tower. Nobody in the kingdom remembered who had sown it. They remembered only that the king's brother had sworn an oath beneath it, and that an oath made in the shade of a palm could not be broken without the fronds coming down.

You had been sent with a strand of shells, twelve of them, strung on a braided cord the colour of old rope. Your father had owed the Harbour Guild for a boat, and the guild wanted its debt paid in the currency of the sea rather than in coin. The clerk, a thin woman with ink on her cuffs, took the cord from your hand and turned each shell over as if checking it for cracks. 'Twelve,' she said. 'Eleven and a half would have been fair.' You told her the boat had gone down the winter before last, and that her ledger should know it.

She did not answer. She walked you out past the gate to the palm, where its shadow lay across the quay like a ruled line. Its trunk curved low over the water, and the drooping fronds hung so still that the gulls rested on them without stirring a single leaf. The clerk pressed her palm flat against the bark and declared the oath witnessed, and therefore discharged. Then she unknotted the cord and handed you back the shells one at a time, and the last one dropped from the tree itself into your open hand, as though the palm had settled the matter on its own.
