Palm tree tattoo on a calf
Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A bare-legged figure stands barefoot on a sandy beach, seen from behind. A single black palm tree sits on the back of the left calf, with a tall trunk and a crown of drooping fronds. The tattoo is a solid, flat silhouette with no shading, and the image is entirely black ink on skin against pale sand, grey sea and a pale sky.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ruth had cut the same palm for forty summers, always the same way: one fold of black card, a pair of nail scissors, the trunk left thin enough to bend in a breeze. Her father had taught her on the pier at Margate, where visitors wanted something to take home that the rain could not spoil. Nobody on the sea front believed a palm would grow in Kent, so they bought them as a joke, and the joke sold better than the sea views.

The autumn Dev came to the kiosk he wanted a palm too, but not in card. He said his grandmother had kept one in a pot on a balcony in Mombasa, and that the tree had never once leaned toward England. He had a sketch on the back of a ferry ticket and asked whether she could draw it small enough to carry somewhere the sand would never reach. Ruth told him she only cut paper. He said paper was how most things started.
She took the ticket home and worked over it by lamplight, fronds drooping the way the sea wind pushed them. The next Saturday she handed him the finished card, folded in four. Inside, in her careful pencil, she had written the name of the pier and the date. He laughed, pressed it flat against the rail and said the tree looked thirsty.
Ruth said it was the only sort of tree that could manage here, and the wind came off the water and lifted the edge of the card, and for a moment the palm seemed to lean toward the sea.
