Circular dotwork symbol on the side ribs

Dotwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a circular emblem with a stylised central symbol sits on the side of the torso, just below the bikini top. The outline and shading are built from fine stippled dots in grey ink, giving a soft, slightly blurred edge. The subject is shown against a pale beach and sea background, with the tattoo in the lower left of the frame.

The thaw came late that year, so Mabel Crewe took the lamp and a sack of salt out to the ice-house before first light, because her grandmother had always said the frost would not lift until the old mark was walked round.

The mark was pressed into the flagstone by the door, a ring of small grey dots that someone had set there with a nail and a great deal of patience. Inside the ring, where the wheel-spokes met, was a cross with its arms bent like wheat stalks after rain. Mabel had never counted the dots. Her grandmother had said there were as many as the winters the farm had survived, and nobody alive had wanted to know the number. The lamp showed frost gathering in the hollows, fine as dust on a slate.

Tobias Lowe came over the stile with his collar up and said the ewes were down in the lower field and would not get up. He did not ask what she was doing. He took the other side of the ring and they walked it together, scattering salt into each dot as they went, the way the old women had done. Halfway round the ice on the trough cracked with a sound like a gate swinging, and Mabel laughed, and then was ashamed of laughing, and then did not mind.

By the time they reached the stone again the lamp was guttering and the sky above the hedge had gone the colour of pewter. Tobias knelt and pressed a fresh dot into the last gap with his thumb. The frost in the hollows was already softening. Somewhere in the thorn a wren was calling, thin and certain, as if it had been told the winter was over and had decided to believe it.
