Palm tree on a tiny island on the ribs

Dotwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small palm tree stands on a low, stippled island with a few wave lines beneath it, set against bare skin. The palm fronds and island are built from fine dots and light shading, giving a soft, textured look. Only black ink and grey tones are used, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame with a second small zigzag mark at the upper right.

The fuel light had been on since Harrow Wells, and I was doing sums in my head about how far a quarter tank would carry a flatbed when the heat started doing tricks. Up ahead the road lifted off the salt and shivered, and there it was: a single palm, leaning, standing on a low hump of land with a ring of little waves at its feet. I'd driven this road for nine years. There was no water out here, no island, nothing that could hold a palm. Dad would have said it was a mirage and kept driving. I pulled onto the verge anyway.

Walking out, the ground went from crust to a fine grey dust that took every footprint and kept it. The island was only a few metres across, speckled as if someone had flicked a pen over the sand. Dad used to tell me that the desert keeps a list of everything it has ever swallowed. I used to think it was a joke. Standing under the fronds, the shade was real enough, cool as a cellar, and the trunk had a stripe of pale wax where someone had once carved initials, long since weathered to nothing.

I sat in that shade for an hour and didn't think about the fuel. When I got back to the cab, the mirage had gone soft at the edges, the way a photograph does when the light shifts. But the dust on my boots was grey, and the island was still there in the rear-view, a single dark flick on the white, leaning towards me like it had been waiting for someone to notice.
