Palm tree island and red sunset on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a single palm tree standing on a low island shape, drawn in fine black linework with light shading on the sand. Beneath the island, a solid red sun sits over the water, with thin horizontal red lines suggesting reflections. The tattoo is centred on a pale inner forearm against a plain white background, with a hand and ring visible below.

The tide had already covered the causeway when Maud Pritchard reached the harbour wall, so she stood with the parcel under her arm and watched the little islet of Scarrow shrink to its single crooked palm. Her brother had planted it there in the summer of 1938, a spindly thing bought from a Madeira trader for two shillings, and every winter since the gales had tried to take it back.

The post for the lighthouse cottage was late. Ted Lowry, who ran the boat, had gone across to the mainland for diesel and not returned, and Maud had been left with a sack of letters and a dog that would not stop barking at the water. She sat on a bollard and counted the envelopes twice. One was addressed in careful capitals she knew, postmarked Lisbon. It had been three years since Frank wrote from anywhere at all.
The sun dropped behind the headland and laid a red coin on the sea. It shivered there, broken into thin lines by the ripples, the way a thing looks when it is sinking slowly and cannot quite finish. Maud turned the letter over. Inside was one sentence: I have finally found a sunset without a palm to frame it, and I keep looking for the one that would.
She tucked the letter into her coat and went down the slip. Ted's boat was a black dot coming round the point, the tide was turning, and somewhere out past Scarrow a man she had not seen in three years was steering towards that palm. She lifted the dog onto the boards and told it, quite firmly, that the post could wait until morning.
