Black palm tree tattoo with a small wave beside it on the ankle and foot, drawn in a simple botanical style.

Palm tree and wave on an ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black palm tree with a curved trunk and tapering fronds sits on the outer ankle, with a small wave line curling on the foot below it. The fronds use bold black fill with feathered edges, while the trunk is a tapered line with some soft grey shading along one side. The ink is black only against the natural skin tone, and the palm rises diagonally up the ankle with the wave at the lower left.

The old women of Tanoa Cove said the palm had been planted the year the sea took Mere's husband, and that it leaned toward the water because it was listening for him. Mere did not believe this. She believed the trunk leaned because the coconuts were heavy and the wind came from the south every afternoon, and she said so to anyone who would stand still long enough to hear it.

When her grandson Iosua came home from the mainland with a job at the port and a cough that would not leave, she sent him down to the shore each morning with a basket and a cup of water. He was to sit beneath the tree and watch for the first line of white where the reef broke. If the wave came in tall, he was to walk home slowly. If it came in low and tired, he was to run.

He counted waves for six weeks. On the forty-first morning the sea came in low and tired, and he ran, and Mere met him at the gate with her hands already held out for the basket. She did not ask what he had seen. She only pointed at the palm, which had dropped a single frond across the path in the night, and said that the tree had finally agreed with her about the wind.

Iosua laughed until he coughed, and then he kept laughing, and the tree went on leaning toward the sea, the way it always had, for no reason anyone could prove.
