Palm trees and beach band on forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A band of four black palm trees stands along a strip of stippled sand with two thin wave lines running through it. The palm trunks and fronds use solid black linework, while the sand is built from small dots that create texture and shading. The band wraps horizontally across the forearm against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The four palms on the Marine Parade were put in by a council man who had never seen a coconut, and every October Mrs Pargeter complained they dropped their fronds on her washing. I was the one pegging the sheets out that autumn, hauling them straight against the wind off the shingle, when Lenny Oake came down the back steps of Seaview House with a sheet of breakfast-menu paper held flat under his thumb.

'Look,' he said, and I looked. He had drawn the front in biro: the grey lip of the tide, two thin lines of water running through it, and then the sand, done in dots so small I had to squint. It had taken him all of August. He'd sat on the sea wall with a flask of tea and pricked the paper one point at a time, saying it was the only way to get the sea right, because you could not hurry a thing made of ten thousand little pieces that all wanted to be somewhere else.
Four palms stood up out of the page, black and leaning, and the fourth had no shadow at its foot. 'Where's yours?' I asked, meaning the one he'd promised me before he went north. He shrugged and said the council had only ever planted four. Then he folded the menu into my apron pocket and walked off along the prom, and the wind took two sheets off the line before I could catch them.
That night I counted the trees from the landing window, four in a row against the grey, and found a fifth where the lamp didn't reach, a dark stroke I had not noticed before. In the morning the dots on his drawing had come loose at one corner, as if someone had brushed a thumb across the sand, and I kept the paper in the drawer with the rent book, unfolding it now and then to check the tide was still coming in.
