Palm tree tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A palm tree is drawn in black ink, with a tall straight trunk rising from a cluster of shaded, feathery fronds. The fronds use soft grey shading and dark accents to give depth against the skin. The tattoo sits in the centre of the frame on a tanned limb, with a turquoise bikini edge visible at the lower right.

The overseer's boy presses the reed tally into your hand before the sun clears the dunes, and you walk the Fayum grove the way you were taught, one trunk at a time, laying your palm flat against each so the scribe downriver can trust the count. Sand has drifted into every hollow of the irrigation channels. The fronds hang grey and heavy in the early light, like smoke that has forgotten where it meant to go.

Most of the trees are crooked, bent by wind off the desert or by the boys who shin up them for dates. One stands apart, tall and straight as a plumb line, its crown spread flat against the sky like a hand held open. Nobody has tapped it. The old gardener, Teti, tells you it has borne nothing in the eleven years he has tended the grove, yet the roll lists it anyway, because a surveyor three reigns ago insisted that a straight trunk is a promise.
You are meant to write nothing against it. Instead you climb the notches cut into its bark, rough steps no wider than a child's foot, and sit where the fronds part. From up here the whole oasis is a dark smudge against the yellow, and the river is a thread pulled tight toward Memphis. You scratch a single stroke on the tablet, then the gardener's name beneath it, and the words the tree keeps the wall from falling.
That evening Teti brings you bread still warm from the clay oven and asks why you wrote a number for a tree that gave him nothing. You tell him that a thing standing straight in a hot wind has earned its place on the roll, whatever it yields. He grunts, chews, and says the tree has always been waiting for someone to notice. In the morning you find he has cut a notch of his own at the foot of the trunk, low enough for a child to climb.
