The tide had taken the footbridge twice that winter, so Mrs Ellery walked the last mile out to Carrick Point with a sack of post on her shoulder and a grudge against the weather. Nobody had written to the lighthouse since August. The keeper, Tom Haddow, was waiting on the step with his boots unlaced, and he didn't look up when she handed him the bundle.

Among the envelopes was a brown packet with no stamp, addressed in pencil to the man who keeps the light. Inside was a dandelion gone to seed, its pale clock loose and trembling, pinned to a card beside a stalk with one closed bud still on it, as though someone had cut it at the right moment and saved the rest for later. Tom knew the hand. It was his sister Ada's, who had sailed for Canada in 1931 and hadn't written since, the way people stop once they've decided a thing is finished.

He read the note twice. It said only: The seeds go where they're blown. Come and find out which way the wind was. Tom climbed the stairs and sat with the lamp unlit, watching the wind chase loose seed across the rock. Then he went out onto the gallery, held the card up to the weather, and opened his hand.

By the next morning the bud on the card had opened, or perhaps it had only looked that way in the grey light, and a single yellow head was pushing up through a crack in the landing step, stubborn as an unpaid debt. Tom left it there. Every week after, he walked down the rocks with his coffee to see how far its long thin stem had reached.
