A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hibiscus had been dead a week before Ada would admit it, so she went on watering the pot each morning out of spite. Len had carried the cutting home from Honolulu in a jam jar wrapped in a wet handkerchief, thirty-one years ago, and it had flowered every June since in the lean-to behind the chapel, the only thing on Gull Lane that ever looked as though it had been somewhere warm.

The postman, Derek, found her on the step with the kettle going cold behind her. "You've a face like a wet Sunday," he said. She showed him the brown stems. He turned one over with his thumb and said nothing useful, which was what she had wanted. Then he mentioned that the Pearsons' boy was taking the island ferry in the morning and could carry a letter, and Ada, who had not written to anyone past the breakwater since Len's funeral, went inside for paper.

She wrote four pages and tore three. The last sentence she kept: the moon comes up over that island the same way it comes up over the Gannet rock, and I have spent thirty-one years pretending I was only looking at the sea. She folded in the last bloom Len ever saw, pressed flat in the back of her Bible and still pink at the edges, and sealed the envelope before she could read it over.

The boy took it without asking what was inside. Ada stood at the harbour wall until the ferry was a smudge against the grey, then went home and carried the dead pot out to the bins, and for the first time in a week she left the tap alone.
