Palm trees and hibiscus across the foot
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two palm trees silhouetted against a distant island, with a cluster of hibiscus and plumeria flowers and leaves below them. The palm fronds are rendered in solid black, while the flowers and island use soft grey shading and smooth gradients. The composition fills the top of the foot, with the sea and sky shaded in faint grey wash behind the motifs.

The palms arrived on Tresco in a crate that smelled of tar and rot, and Ruth Pender had to prise the lid off with a bread knife because her father's hammer had gone over the side in March. Two seedlings, roots bound in sacking, sent by a man in Honolulu who had once owed her father a boat and settled the debt in hibiscus cuttings instead.

Nobody on the islands believed palms would survive the grey wind. Her father always said they needed a sheltered corner and someone stubborn enough to talk to them. So she dug the holes behind the granite wall where the ferry crews smoked, and every evening she walked down past the quay to see whether the fronds had lifted or drooped overnight.
By August the taller one had opened a fan of green as wide as a rowing boat, and the hibiscus she had coaxed into a cutting bed produced a single red bloom the size of a saucer. She sent a photograph to Honolulu. The reply came back in one line: Now you can tell people you own a bit of the Pacific.
She pinned it above the kettle and did not answer. Some things, she thought, were better kept as the last thing said by a man who had always kept his word. She took the trowel out to the wall, knelt in the damp sand, and started digging the third hole, because the sea had already started to take the light off the water and the wind would not wait for anyone.
