Sunset beach and palm trees on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A full-colour tattoo covers the upper arm with a sunset over the sea, framed by two dark silhouetted palm trees. Soft, blended shading gives the orange, yellow and purple clouds and the glowing water a painterly depth. Large plumeria flowers in red, orange and pink sit in the lower foreground, anchoring the composition.

The guard at the salt gate would only pass a traveller who could name three trees growing on the far side, and Ines had seen only two of them. She stood in the dust with her mother's blue shawl folded over one arm while the sun slid toward the water behind the customs shed, and she tried to remember the third.

Teodoro, the guard, waited with his pen lifted. She said palm, and then palm again, the tall one that leaned over the harbour wall. The third she could only describe. It grew in a yard across the water, her grandmother had said, and in the mornings its white flowers fell onto the step and smelled of warm milk. Teodoro was quiet for a while. His own brother lived somewhere beyond the sandbanks. He did not stamp her papers. Instead he asked what colour the sea went at this hour.

She told him: first orange where the sun touched it, then a thick gold, then a grey-blue like a pigeon's neck where the palms stood black against the glow. He nodded slowly and said the water had looked exactly so for as long as anyone on either shore had kept a record, and that he had never once heard it described properly by someone who was not already leaving. He lifted the rope.

On the far side she walked down through the sand until the tide was at her ankles and found the tree, red-edged flowers scattered on the wet stones like coins the sea had declined. She picked up the one nearest her feet, and the water came in to take the rest. She kept that single flower, and it stayed pink in her book for a week, long after the sunset had gone out of the sky over the gate.
