Pansies and petals on the side of the neck
Botanical · Neck · Colour · Photo
A small cluster of pansies in purple, yellow and rose tones runs down the side of the neck, with a pink petal at the top and a heart-shaped petal below. The petals are rendered with soft, blended shading and faded edges, giving a watercolour effect. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a plain background, with the ear and jaw partly visible at the top of the frame.

Ada had the wagon door open before the fair had finished unloading, because the light in the field behind the Crown was the good kind, low and yellow, and her father always said watercolour wanted it. Walter Pyle had painted the banners for Coker's Travelling Show for thirty-one years, and now he sat on the back step with a tin of pans on his knees and a cup of tea going cold.

"Mrs Coker wants pansies on the big board," he said. "Purple for the strongman's lot, yellow for the fortune tent, and rose for the girl on the swing."
Ada didn't answer. She was thinking of the pressed flowers in her mother's Bible, gone the colour of weak tea, crumbling whenever the pages were turned too fast. Pansies held their shape least of all. You had to lay the colour on wet and let the edges bleed into the paper before it dried, or they looked like bruises.
She painted until the light went: three faces on the board, a rose petal falling from the top corner, and a single heart-shaped petal beneath, its colour thinning to nothing at the edge so it seemed to be leaving the page even as it landed. Her father came to stand behind her with his hands in his pockets. "That one's going," he said, nodding at the falling petal. "I know," said Ada. "That's the point of it."
