Poppy bouquet on the upper chest

Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo

A bouquet of red poppies, pale pink and white blooms and small blue-grey flowers sits on the upper chest, just below the collarbone. The petals are shaded softly with gradients and fine detail, giving a painterly, watercolour-like finish, and the dark centres of the poppies are crisp. Red dominates the composition, with muted blues and cream tones around it, set against a plain blue top and red-brown hair.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Halloran came in before four with a bucket of poppies cut from the verge behind the allotments, their stems still wet and their petals already crumpling at the edges. She set them in a jam jar on the flour bin, where the glow from the oven hood caught the red, and said the Sunday loaf could wait for once.

Tomasz worked the poppy seed into the dough by hand, a grey dust that got under his nails and into the creases of his knuckles. For years the seed had come folded in a paper twist from her sister's garden in Kraków. This year there was only the jar, and she had stopped talking about the difference, the way she had stopped talking about most things since the spring.

At half four she pulled one bloom from the jar, pinched the stem flat and asked him to press it onto the top of the loaf before it went into the oven. The petal was thin as tissue and he was afraid it would burn, but it held, its dark centre gone soft and brown against the dough.

By the time the window had greyed and the first customer's bell rang, the loaf was cooling on the rack with a faint red stain across its crust. Mrs Halloran wrapped it in brown paper, wrote the price on the wrapping with a stub of pencil, and handed it across the counter without a word. The petal had stuck fast.
