Orange floral bouquet on a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small bouquet of orange, red, pink and yellow flowers with dark green leaves and stems sits on the inner wrist. The petals use soft shading and blended colour, giving a painterly, watercolour-like look. The design sits slightly off centre across the wrist, with the largest bloom to the right and smaller flowers trailing to the left.

Dear Ruth, the poppies came up in the bed by the coal shed, the one nobody would plant because your grandfather swore the soil was dead as a doornail. Forty years of cinders and I never once thought to dig it over. Then in June the whole corner went orange, the colour of a stove lid at dusk, with those papery petals that look as though someone painted them wet and let the paint run. Mr Okonedo from next door came over with his hat in his hands just to look. He said he had never seen anything so cheeky growing out of a heap of rubbish.

I meant to tell you that I took the biggest bloom to Mrs Pryce at the vicarage, and she pressed it between two pages of the hymn book. Then she dropped the hymn book in the bath, so I have no idea what survived. The yellow ones on the left have gone to seed already, the little dark heads rattling like dice. I have saved you a paper bag of them. Keep it away from the cat, he thinks anything in a bag is a toy.
You asked whether I am going to dig the bed up before the frost. I am not. I have decided the flowers can have it. The roses along the fence have had their turn and they are sulking, and I would rather one corner of this garden made a fuss for once. Bring the girls at the August bank holiday and we will cut a bunch for the kitchen table. You can tell me again how the job in Leeds is going, though I would rather you did not mention the boss. Love, Aunt Maud.
