Traditional · Mixed · Flash
An oval rope-framed design showing a folded paper boat on rolling waves, with a red lightning bolt striking through stippled storm clouds. Two small birds and diagonal rain lines fill the sky above the boat. A red flower with dark leaves sits at the bottom of the frame.

The storm had closed the pier at six, but the Marine Ballroom kept its doors open because the band had already been paid. Nell Garrity sat at the upright piano with a stack of song sheets beside her, and when the lights dipped for the third time she folded the top sheet into a boat without looking down, the way her father had taught her on the Holyhead ferry.

Outside, rain came sideways across the promenade and the sea climbed the railings in grey shelves. Between numbers she could see lightning through the long windows, a white crack over the water that froze the dancers mid-step. Frank Doyle, the drummer, leaned over to ask whether she meant to sing or sink, and she told him she would sing if he stopped counting the bars out loud.
At the interval a boy in a borrowed blazer came to the piano with his cap in his hands and asked for "Harbour Lights". She had it in her fingers already, so she played it slow, and he took a girl with soaked shoes onto the floor. When the bolt split the flagpole outside, the whole room gasped and then laughed together. Nell nudged the paper boat along the lid of the piano, watching it ride the wet varnish towards the edge.
She left it on the windowsill when the band packed up. By morning the sea had gone flat and blue, and the gulls had pecked the paper into a shape nobody could fold again. She kept it anyway, and by the end of the season she could play the song without looking at the keys.
