Mountain peaks on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of three mountain peaks sits on a pale forearm covered with fine body hair. A solid black triangle forms the front peak, with two taller peaks behind it shaded in lilac and mauve with soft, blended edges. The design is centred on the arm against a plain background and a red tartan sleeve.

You find the old geography register at the bottom of a box in the loft, the one with Mr Hallam's initials on the spine, and you carry it to the school reunion under your arm like a summons. Nobody else will remember the fourth-year map project, where every pupil had to draw a ridge they had never climbed. The hall smells of floor polish and the same orange squash it served twenty years ago. Across the room a broad man in a navy jumper is squinting at you, and it takes a full minute before you place Dennis Okafor, who once spent a whole field trip insisting the contour lines on his map meant the hill was made of cake.

He has brought his own proof. From an inside pocket he takes a folded sheet of paper, soft as cloth, and on it are three peaks in pencil: a tall one behind, a lower one beside it, and a solid front triangle he shaded so hard the graphite shines. You tell him it looks like a tent that has lost an argument with the weather. He laughs, the same honking laugh, and says he finally went to the real hills at thirty, then came back down and sold his car to pay for boots. The two pale peaks, he says, are the ones he never managed to reach. He keeps tapping the black one with his thumbnail, as if it were the one that stopped him.

You open the register on the trestle table between the crisps and the name badges and find the page you marked in 1999 with a single blue inked triangle beside his name. Dennis reads it twice without speaking. Then he takes the biro from your hand and adds a small pale peak in the margin, a little taller than the rest, and presses the nib so lightly it barely leaves a mark.

Neither of you says anything. The squash keeps coming, the hall keeps filling, and behind you the caretaker starts stacking the chairs against the wall.
