Geometric dog head on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of a dog's head, built from angular straight lines in the manner of an origami fold. The linework is thin and even, in black ink on pale skin, with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits alone near the centre of the frame, with the wrist and a grey woven fabric visible in the background.

Now sit close, because the fire's low and the wind's come round off the moor, and I'll not tell this twice. Your great-aunt Edith kept the lambing pens at Lower Hollin the winter the snow sealed the lane for six weeks. She had one dog, a bull terrier called Sable, the worst-tempered animal in the parish, but she would lie down for Edith and nobody else.

The trouble came the night the ewes started dropping early. Edith had no tags left for the lambs, so she sat by the range folding a sheet of old feed-merchant's paper, the way her mother taught her, one crease and then another, until a dog's head sat on the table with its sharp nose pointed at the door. She set it on the sill. 'Go on, then,' she told it, half joking, 'fetch me the men from the top barn.'
Sable got up, growled at the paper, and went out after it into the blizzard. In the morning Edith followed the tracks and found only the dog's prints, sharp-edged and straight, running in lines across the drifts as if they'd been ruled with a blade. At the top barn the two shepherds were digging out a stile with their bare hands. Nobody could say how the paper creature had reached them, or how Sable had found the way home again.
The paper head was still on the sill when the thaw came. Edith kept it in her apron pocket for the rest of her days, and it's in my tin now, flattened as flat as a letter. Some nights, when the wind goes just so, I hear a low growl from the dresser, and I know who's keeping watch over the gate. So mind you latch it, and don't go trusting the snow.
