Pastel crystal heart on an arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A faceted heart made of crystal shapes fills most of the frame. Bold black outlines define each facet, with soft pink, lilac, mint and yellow shading and small pale speckles that suggest light. The skin is pale, the background is blurred, and denim is visible at the edges of the photo.

Dear Nell,

The geode came out of the quarry wall at Stanhope on Tuesday, split clean as a pear, and I spent three nights with the lamp on it before I let myself believe what was inside. Not amethyst, not the dull grey stuff the dealers sell by the kilo. Pinks and lilacs and a green like the underside of a wave, all of it stacked in facets so sharp I cut myself on the lip of it twice.
Mr Ashdown at the lapidary shop said I had to choose: sell it whole to the museum in Leeds or take a saw to it. I took the saw. Nine days at the wheel, three hundred cuts, and I have kept the scraps in a biscuit tin under the bench because I cannot bring myself to throw away the ones that caught the light like the sky over the moor after the fires go out.
You will laugh, but the last piece is for you. I cut it into a heart, the way Mum used to draw them on the back of the shopping list. Every edge is a little different, every face a different colour, and in the middle where the cracks run, I left a row of pale flecks so it looks like someone has spilled stars inside it.
Come and see it before the Saturday market. The door is open and so is the kettle.
Love, Tom
