The peony by the orchard gate has done it again, three heads on one stem and the small bud at the end still shut tight like a fist. Dad always said they only flower properly if you leave them alone, and I think he was right, because I have not touched the thing since the spring frost and look at it. The apples are coming down faster than Tom can gather them, and the wasps have found the windfalls under the Bramley, but the peony does not care. It keeps its colour the way Mum kept her good tablecloth, folded and proud.

I went down this morning with the wheelbarrow meaning to clear the nettles and found a fox asleep in the long grass right beside it. He opened one eye at me, decided I was not worth the trouble, and went back to sleep. I stood there a while with the barrow handles in my hands. The petals on the middle flower had gone a deep magenta at the edges, almost bruised, and the leaves underneath were that dark teal that looks black until the sun gets into it.

Tom says I should cut the bud and bring it in before the first real rain spoils it. I told him no. Some things are allowed to finish in their own time, even when everyone else has already packed up for the winter. If you come up for the weekend bring your secateurs anyway, but I want you to see it first.
