Mr Halloran kept a rule at the Star Ballroom on Clevedon Pier: nobody stepped onto the sprung floor until the drummer had counted four bars twice. He said it was the only sensible thing a dancer could learn, and he said it to every lad who came in wanting to be first.

Dennis Pike was the worst of them. He lunged at the beat like a dog at a dropped chip, and by the third Saturday I had enough of his boots on my toes. So in the ladies' cloakroom I uncapped the biro I used for raffle tickets and wrote PATIENCE across the inside of my own wrist, where I would see it each time I raised my arm to signal the band. I wrote it on my own wrist, not his, because I was the one losing my temper.

That evening Dennis watched the word while I counted. Then the band struck up the foxtrot, the drummer gave his four and four again, and Dennis stood perfectly still, hands loose, for one whole bar longer than he wanted to.

When we finally moved, we moved together. Mr Halloran, up in the balcony with his stopwatch, said nothing at all, which from him was a standing ovation. Afterwards Dennis asked whether the word was meant for him. I told him it was for the floor, which had been waiting far longer than either of us.
