Three outline hearts on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three hollow outline hearts step diagonally down the inner wrist, each slightly smaller than the one above it. The linework is thin and dark with a slightly uneven, hand-drawn edge, and the hearts are unshaded. The ink is black on a plain background of skin, with a blue surface and a dark sleeve at the lower edge of the frame.

The largest had a dent near the handle where someone had dropped it on the flagstones in 1979. The smallest was no bigger than a teacup saucer.

On the Tuesday before the church bazaar, the middle tin went missing. Dev swore he had put it back on the shelf. Rosa swore she had never touched anything of Mrs Okafor's in her life. I found it in the flour bin, tucked behind a sack of semolina, with a sticky thumbprint on the lid and a pencilled note folded under the rim: Bake one for the boy who sweeps. He never gets a slice.
We baked. Dev made the batter too thick, Rosa lost her temper with the oven door, and I scraped the tins with a palette knife until my knuckles were pink. When the sponges came out we set them on the wire racks, largest, middle, smallest, and they sat in a row like a staircase going down. Tomas, the sweeper, came in at four with his broom still on his shoulder. He looked at the three little cakes for a long while and asked whether we had made a mistake.
