Traditional feather tattoo on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large feather is the central subject, drawn with bold black outlines and filled with red, orange, pink, teal and green, with dotted and scalloped detailing along the shaft. Partial arrow designs with teal and black fletching appear at the left and right edges, and fine black swirls sit beside the feather's base. The solid colour work is bright and even, and the photo is taken close-up at an angle across the forearm against a light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomasz had the ovens lit by four, the flour sacks stacked against the cold wall, and the yard still black beyond the shutter. Nell arrived at quarter past with rain on her shoulders and a brown paper parcel under one arm. "Mr Adair sent these back," she said. "Said you'd know what to do with them."

Inside were six arrows, fletched in teal and black, the vanes cut so they curled like weed in a slow tide. Tomasz turned one under the bulb. Adair had been a fletcher before he took the bench at the cricket club, and he never returned work unless it was wrong. The fault was quick to find: a split nock, and a shaft warped by a damp loft. Nell leaned against the proving cabinet and watched him pick at the glue. "He said you'd know," she repeated, as if he might have missed it the first time.

Tomasz had not cut a feather in twenty years. But the drawer under the bench still held the goose quills he used for egg wash on the morning buns, each one hard-used and cut at the tip with the knife his father had given him. He laid a quill against the arrow and marked where the new vane should sit. Grey light came through the window while he worked, flour and glue on his thumbs, the oven ticking as it climbed to heat.

When the first loaves came out, Nell was asleep on the flour sacks with her boots off. Tomasz wrapped the repaired arrow in a tea towel and set it on the sill where the sun would reach it first. It was still a little crooked. He wrote Adair a note saying so, and that the feathers at least were right now, and that he could come and see for himself. Then he filled the kettle, because somebody would want tea when she woke.
